The BMW logo does not represent a propeller, as many people think. It is the result of a fusion between Rapp's emblem and the colors of Bavaria.
BMW, an acronym for Bayerische Motoren Werke, was founded in 1917 from the Rapp Motorenwerke company, which specialized in aircraft engines.
After World War I, Rapp supplied the German air force. Cars did not yet play a role in the lives of most people. Travel was done by train.
Rapp's headquarters were in Munich, as were those of Gustav Otto's aircraft factory, where the engines were installed in the aircraft. In 1916, Otto's company went bankrupt, giving way to Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG (BFW).
In 1917, Rapp Motorenwerke decided to change its name to Bayerische Motoren Werke (GmbH).
One year later, the BMW name temporarily disappeared, and for good reason: the Treaty of Versailles prohibited Germany from manufacturing aircraft engines. BMW then began specializing in brakes for railways. It was a huge success! That's why, in 1920, the Berlin-based company Knorr-Bremse acquired a majority stake in BMW. However, the brand's disappearance was short-lived.
The second BMW foundation was established in 1922 by the major investor and aviation pioneer Camillo Castiglioni, the main shareholder of Knorr-Bremse AG. He purchased the BMW name and took over the engine manufacturing business, employees, production facilities, and logo. All of this became part of Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG (BFW).
In the same year, the name Bayerische Motoren Werke AG was reinstated and re-entered in the commercial register. BMW AG is therefore the legal successor to BFW AG.
The official date of BMW's birth will be March 7, 1916 (the date BFW was founded).
