Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman, an English automotive engineer, decided to start his own car company in 1952 with his partner Michael Allen. However, his partner left the project that same year, and Chapman went on to found Lotus Engineering Company Limited with the woman who would become his wife.
In 1955, he founded Lotus Cars, specializing in the design of Formula 1 cars.
In 1957, Lotus launched its first renowned car, the Seven, which became the brand's first major success, followed by other models such as the Elan in 1960, which sold 10,000 units.
In 1982, the founder of Lotus passed away and the group was bought by General Motors, but the racing team subsidiary remained independent until 1994 before it disappeared.
In 1996, Lotus Cars was acquired by Malaysian manufacturer Proton.
