An English engineer in the Royal Air Force, Colin Chapman built his first car in 1948 using an old chassis, which he named the Lotus ML1. This was followed by the Lotus ML2 and then the MK3 in 1951.
With success at its peak, Colin Chapman then considered mass production, which led him to found Lotus Cars in 1955. It was with the Lotus 11 model that the "MK" designation disappeared.
In 1957, he created Team Lotus, which quickly became a major Formula 1 racing team, and his first sports car was born!
In the 2000s, the Lotus Elise was launched, marking the brand's second major success after the Lotus Elan.
In 1986, after Colin Chapman's death, the Lotus brand was bought by General Motors, which then sold it in 1993 to ACBN Holdings (the same group as Bugatti).
However, three years later, Lotus Cars was bought out again by Malaysian car manufacturer Proton.
For many years now, Lotus has been steadily growing and increasing its sales. Just over 3,000 vehicles from the brand are currently for sale on various used car sales websites in Europe.
