Did you know? Land Rover created the first Monster Truck, an SUV with tractor tires and Studebaker axles, for the British Forestry Commission in the 1950s. It was the world's first monster truck.
The Land Rover brand was born in 1947 during a sketch made in the sand on a Welsh beach. Using a Jeep on his farm in Anglesey, Rover's technical director Maurice Wilks and his brother Spencer Wilks, Rover's managing director, identified a need in the market. They then began developing the Land Rover using a Jeep chassis and a Rover engine. To save on rationed steel and avoid expensive press tools, they used light alloy body panels and cutouts for the chassis.
One year later, the first Land Rover was launched at the Amsterdam Motor Show and became an instant success!
In 1949, the first Land Rovers were exported to the United States.
In 1950, the original Land Rover design was updated: larger, more powerful headlights, a hard top was fitted, the four-wheel drive system was changed dynamically, and more. It was only a year later that the Land Rover engine increased in size from 1.6L to 2.0L.
After several years of growth and success, Rover Company merged with Leyland, a truck manufacturer that had acquired rival carmaker Coventry Triumph. One year later, Leyland, including Rover and Triumph, joined the British Motor Corporation (BMC), which included Austin, Morris, and Jaguar.
In June 1970, the famous Range Rover was launched! It would go on to become the most famous model in the future!
In 1971, the 750,000th Land Rover was produced and received the RAC Dewar Award.
The millionth Land Rover was manufactured in 1976. Several other models were created over the years.
In 1988, for its 40th anniversary, Land Rover introduced a Borg-Warner chain transfer case with a viscous coupling center differential in the Range Rover's drivetrain, enhancing its refinement and luxury qualities. That year, Land Rover's total sales exceeded 1.6 million vehicles worldwide. In addition, the Rover Group was sold to British Aerospace (BAe).
