Audi means "listen" in Latin.
On July 16, 1909, August Horch founded his automobile company but was unable to use his name, as it had already been taken by another manufacturer in Germany. He therefore chose the Latin translation of his name: Audi, meaning "listen," giving rise to Audi Automobilwerke GmbH.
Everyone knows that Audi is a German brand, but few people know that it was created from the merger of four manufacturers: Audi, DKW, Horch, and Wanderer. In 1932, the four rings symbolizing this union were created under the name Auto Union AG. Audi took over the luxury and high-end sector.
In 1965, the Audi brand was used for all production, and that same year, the Volkswagen Group acquired Audi. Ferdinand Karl Piëch, grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, joined Audi in 1972 and became a key player. Under his leadership, Audi developed new engines, bodywork, and, most importantly, the Quattro transmission, winning the World Rally Championship twice. In 1980, Audi's first true sports car, the Audi Quattro coupe, was launched.
The RS (RennSport) range refers to Audi's ultra-sporty models, built by the Quattro GmbH division. In response to the sports divisions of Mercedes (AMG) and BMW (Motorsport), Audi launched the RS2 in 1990, designed in collaboration with Porsche, with a 315 hp 5-cylinder engine.
This was followed by an ever more powerful, sporty, and innovative evolution!
